Modern communities often follow the original boundaries of the rancho, based on geographic features and abstract straight lines. Construction of the first defensive structure began in 1776. It is situated at the headwaters of the San Antonio River on the Balcones Escarpment, about 80 miles (130 km) southwest of Austin.
